Badger Rock Urban Farm

An educational farm supporting healthy food access

Located at our Badger Rock Neighborhood Center in South Madison, Badger Rock Urban Farm is an educational farm that supports healthy food access in the surrounding neighborhoods, which are a City of Madison food access priority area. The farm is managed by Rooted staff and is a learning space for students attending Badger Rock Middle School (BRMS).

As part of their garden class, using organic growing practices, students start produce from seed in a heated greenhouse over the winter, plant out seedlings in two hoop houses and garden beds come spring, and tend the gardens with Rooted staff throughout the school year. In the summer months, former BRMS students, now high school age, return as youth employees who are paid a stipend for their work, through a partnership with the City of Madison. Badger Rock Urban Farm produce is sold at the Badger Rock Farm Stand. Proceeds from sales support the middle school garden class.

Rooted Sprouts

Rooted also operates a certified organic, wholesale sprouts business from Badger Rock Urban Farm. The sprouts – alfalfa, broccoli (red clover and broccoli rabe), and spicy mix (red clover, arugula, fenugreek, and radish), are grown indoors at Badger Rock and sold at Willy Street Co-op, Hy-Vee, and Metcalfe’s (Hilldale).
